There may be instances in which IV sedation is the best option for anesthesia during your visit with us. While this may not be completely foreign to you, if you don’t know much about it, then chances run quite high that you have questions and would like some reassurance before you schedule your oral surgery or otherwise. Let’s make sure you feel you’ve been given a solid introduction with answers to important and frequently asked questions. If there is any detail left unaddressed, please feel free to let us know!
What Is This?
IV sedation is short for intravenous sedation. What’s this mean? There are a couple things to keep in mind. First, on the spectrum of dental sedation options, IV is the strongest. It’s also provided to you through an IV, which is a very tiny needle that lets us administer a medicine directly into your vein.
Is This Safe?
Of course. We provide IV sedation to our patients after a complete conversation and check regarding your current medications and health history. Once we know you can safely receive this type of anesthesia and the suggested treatment or oral surgery, we can move forward with care. Remember that a licensed anesthesiologist will be the individual who provides you with sedation and who monitors your vitals and comfort throughout your visit with us.
Will I Be Sleeping?
You may think you were sleeping once your procedure is through. However, the answer is: No, this is conscious sedation. However, due to its strength, it can cause what we call an “amnesic” effect. You may forget segments of your visit or even most of it (the parts that take place while under sedation), which can make the process feel quite quick and easy.
