Children’s Dentistry

Most young kids view visiting the dentist in one of two ways. The machinery, procedures, X-rays, and photos either typically either fascinate them or frighten them. Whether your child is the precocious type who will ask questions every step of the way, or the timid type who will need an abundance of patience and caring reassurance, Dr. Smith will put your child at ease and coach them on how to keep their teeth healthy.

Reassuring Chair-side Manner

The father of a young child himself, Dr. Smith enjoys working with children and knows how to meet them at their level and help them feel comfortable. Be assured that your child is in caring hands when he or she visits Pecan Tree Dental.

Fluoride

For years, dentists have known that fluoride plays an important role in keeping teeth healthy and preventing cavities. When fluoride is absorbed into a child’s body, it strengthens teeth and improves the odds that a child’s teeth will remain healthy for years to come. Fluoride can be taken in tablet form or applied in liquid form directly to the teeth. Dr. Smith is an advocate of fluoride treatment for kids, and he’ll go over the options with you at your child’s visit.

Dental Sealants

Another way to prevent cavities in kids is by applying a sealant to their teeth. As the name implies, a sealant seals out decay-causing microbes so they can’t infiltrate the tooth surface. Tooth decay often starts in the hard-to-reach grooves, pits, and crevices of the chewing surfaces of the teeth. Adults tend to be better at focusing their brushing and flossing on these trouble spots. Kids often don’t have the dexterity to clean these tough areas effectively.

If Dr. Smith determines that your child can benefit from sealants, the process is quick and easy. He will apply thin layers of resin over the surfaces of the teeth so decay won’t be able to creep in. Sealants aren’t a guarantee against cavities, as decay may still reach areas in between the teeth where sealants can’t be applied.

Tips for Parents

Especially if your child will be visiting the dentist for the first time, be sure to prepare him or her for what to expect. It might be helpful to read your child picture books about visiting the dentist. Talk about why it is important that we keep our teeth and gums healthy, and don’t forget to tell them that Pecan Tree Dental has a treasure box full of fun trinkets — they’ll be able to choose a prize after their appointment.
