Sedation Dentistry

Whether you are coming in to see Dr. Smith to have a tooth extracted, a cavity filled, or a dental implant placed, your comfort is one of our top concerns. We know that the thought of having dental work done causes anxiety in many patients. That’s why we practice sedation dentistry — to put patients at ease during their visit.

Depending on what your dental procedure will entail, Dr. Smith will use one of the following methods to alleviate your anxiety, and ensure that you’ll be comfortable during your visit.

  • Oral Sedation (valium). The most conservative sedation option, valium is prescribed to relax patients who might be a bit nervous about their upcoming dental procedure. Dr. Smith usually has patients take one pill the night before their appointment so they can sleep, and then another pill an hour before the scheduled procedure.
  • Nitrous Oxide. Also known as laughing gas, nitrous oxide relaxes patients and makes them feel euphoric and at ease. A scented mask is placed over the patient’s mouth and nose, and he or she breathes in the gas. Once the mask is removed, the foggy feeling dissipates quickly.
  • Intravenous Sedation (IV). In rare cases, Dr. Smith will recommend IV sedation for patients who are extremely anxious about dental treatment, or are having complex dental work or surgery. If an IV is needed, a licensed anesthesiologist will be brought in to administer it and monitor the patient during the procedure.
