Helping Kids With Children’s Dentistry

We want to help your kids end 2024 and start 2025 with a healthier smile, one that shines and makes them feel confident. From checkups and cleanings to dental sealants, we can help kids of all ages enjoy better oral health. In today’s blog, your Grand Prairie, TX, dentist talks about how we help little smiles with children’s dentistry.

When Your Kids Need a Checkup and Cleaning

For children ages two and older, we recommend a checkup visit once every six months. During these appointments, we will look closely at their teeth and gums with digital x-rays and intraoral camera technology, so we can identify any areas of concern with precision and accuracy, and create a treatment plan to address them. The earlier we identify concerns like tooth decay and gingivitis, the better we can protect their oral health. Our team also wants to make sure that primary teeth are erupting and falling out as they should, so the risk of misalignment is lowered. In the same visit, we help protect the smile with a dental cleaning. The cleaning removes all plaque and tartar buildup in a matter of minutes, lowering the risk of bad breath, teeth stains, cavities, and gingivitis.

Treating Cavities

What if we discover a cavity? For a safe and lifelike solution, we will place composite resin fillings. The composite resin material is metal-free and safe for kids of all ages. The material is biocompatible and bonds with the tooth. We can also shade it to offer a more lifelike appearance. The placement process only takes one visit, so your little one can leave the office with a filling that stops discomfort and looks natural after only one sitting.

Preventing Tooth Decay

Our team also offers treatments to help lower the risk of cavities. During each checkup visit, we can apply fluoride to the teeth in a varnish form. This then strengthens the enamel, even the weakened portion, to help prevent tooth decay. The application takes seconds, and kids just need to avoid food and drink for about a half hour. We also have dental sealants, a thin acyclic layer we add to the rear teeth, the molars that kids have trouble reaching when they brush and floss. The sealants then prevent food and drink particles from being caught between these teeth, and they can stay in place for up to ten years in some cases! As with fluoride treatments, the application only takes a few seconds and children just need to avoid food and drink for about 30 minutes while the material cures.
