Frequently Asked Questions About Sedation Dentistry

Question: When do we need sedation?

Answer: A dentist may recommend a calming solution if a patient experiences anxiety or has a serious fear of visiting the dentist. Other offices may recommend this for people with developmental disorders or medical complications that make receiving dental care difficult. Avoiding care due to your anxiety can increase the risk of tooth decay, gum disease, and even tooth loss.

Question: What is nitrous oxide?

Answer: More commonly known as laughing gas, this is administered through a mask and helps a patient enter a calmer state. The effects wear off as soon as the procedure ends, so you can return to work of school. This is one of the more frequently recommended calming procedures.

Question: How does oral sedation work?

Answer: With oral sedation the patient takes a pill prior to the procedure. The patient enters a deep state of relaxation and will have little to no memory of the procedure. However, the patient should arrange for a friend or family member to bring him/her home. A patient should also avoid driving or operating machinery for at least 24 hours.

Question: What is IV sedation?

Answer: The deepest form of sedation available. We will monitor your vitals throughout the procedure. As with the oral option, you will need to arrange a ride home and avoid driving for several hours until the effects wear off. We will be happy to address any questions you may have about our treatment options and calming solutions.
