When deciding which crown is right for you there are three major factors to consider: strength, durability, and esthetics. There are three types of dental crowns:
All-metal: Fabricated entirely out of metal these crowns are typically used for molars because of their strength and durability. Metal crowns are often the treatment of choice for individuals who brux (grind and clench), and for back teeth which are harder to see.
All-ceramic: Usually made from porcelain, these crowns are often the treatment of choice for front teeth due to their esthetics. They are not as strong as metal or porcelain-fused-to-metal which also makes them a good choice for front teeth.
Porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM): PFM’s are basically a metal crown (for strength and durability) with a porcelain coating fused to the surface (for esthetics).
Zirconia: Fracture and chip resistant, these crowns are very strong and esthetic and are also often the treatment of choice for patients who brux.
All-metal crowns offer a precise fit, strength, longevity, biocompatibility and minimal tooth reduction, but are not esthetically pleasing. All-ceramic crowns are esthetic but not as strong or long-lasting. PFM crowns supply the strength and fit, but the porcelain can chip, and can also wear down teeth that bite against it. Dr. Quinn Smith will help you choose the type of crown that’s right for you.
