Can You Benefit From Gum Contouring?

When you think of enhancing your smile you may think tooth whitening, veneers, or other cosmetic procedures. Gum contouring is a cosmetic procedure that can enhance your smile as well. Maybe you’ve never considered your gums part of your smile because in most cases your gingival tissue does not show very much when you smile, and that’s the way it should be. However, if you are unhappy with your smile because your gums are too far below your upper lip when you smile, you may benefit from gum contouring.

What is a Gummy Smile?

For those of you who have a gummy smile, gum contouring may be the answer. A gummy smile is when your gingival tissue covers too much of your teeth making your teeth appear shorter. When you smile there should be an esthetic balance between your teeth and gums, but if there is just as much gum showing as your teeth you have a gummy smile. According to the art of smile design, for a smile to be considered esthetic, there is an appropriate amount of gingival tissue for each individual tooth. To create that smile, excess gum tissue can be removed so more of the tooth surface shows, your teeth don’t look small, and the ratio of gingival tissue to tooth is esthetically pleasing.

While at one time scalpels were used to slice away excess gingival tissue, today’s technology makes the procedure quick and easy. A soft tissue laser is used to gently scalp the gums while cauterizing (or sealing) the tissue at the same time to stop bleeding and promote healing. Results are instant and the procedure can be performed in one visit.
