Want to transform your entire smile in dramatic fashion? Veneers may be just what Dr. Smith orders. Veneers are thin layers (sleeves) of material that are applied over your existing teeth. They are beneficial for people with small teeth who wish to enlarge them, and people with intrinsic stains on their teeth, which are resistant to teeth whitening treatments. There are two types of veneers available: traditional and minimal-prep veneers.
Traditional Porcelain Veneers
When placing porcelain veneers, Dr. Smith removes a very small layer of enamel from the front of the patient’s natural teeth. This gives the veneer a place to fit. The veneer (made of layered porcelain) is permanently attached to the tooth with resin, and then cured with a special light to cement the bond.
The benefits of porcelain veneer restorations include a custom fit and an exceptionally natural look. They are permanent, non-reversible, and very durable.
Some patients want to change the look of their smile, but don’t necessarily want a treatment that can’t be reversed. In this case, Lumineers may be a good option. Because Lumineers are very thin – about half the thickness of porcelain veneers, Dr. Smith can apply these directly over natural teeth, without having to remove any tooth enamel. They are applied the same way as porcelain veneers – they are bonded to the natural teeth and then cured with a light.
The primary benefit of Lumineers is their ability to transform the look of your smile without removing any enamel, which means the procedure is reversible and more conservative. Since Lumineers are extremely thin, they may not be appropriate for patients with dark tooth stains.
What to Expect
Regardless of which type of veneer is best for you, the process will take at least two visits. First, you’ll come in and Dr. Smith will create a mold of your teeth that will be sent to a dental lab. You’ll also choose an exact shade of white for your veneers. While patients natural inclination may be to go super white, Dr. Smith will guide you in your decision so you’ll achieve a result that looks most natural.
Once we receive your veneers from the dental lab, you’ll return for a fitting. If everything looks good and no tweaks are necessary, Dr. Smith will bond the veneers to your teeth and you will leave our office with a brand new smile.
