When kids come home with their Halloween haul, they increase the sugar in their diet. The particles of sugar cling to the teeth or become trapped between them, especially if they are sticky like caramel. Harmful oral bacteria now have a chance to break them down, which creates higher levels of oral acidity to weaken enamel, and also coats the teeth in a sticky layer of plaque buildup, which also helps weaken outer enamel. As the protective layer erodes, harmful bacteria can reach the inner dentin to cause cavities.
Children then experience toothaches and need treatment, as a filling can prevent the need for a root canal. To help protect children, we suggest limiting them to a piece or two after dinner. The increased saliva production will help rinse away the sugar. You can also make sure your kids drink a glass of water to help cleanse the mouth of sugar! Some families even give kids a chance to trade their candy in for a small toy or money. If your family will be handing out treats in your neighborhood or building, consider fun candy-free options like Halloween-themed temporary tattoos, stickers, or party favors.
We can also help safeguard children against cavities in our office. With a checkup visit, we will examine the smile and look for the earliest signs of cavities, so we can treat them with lifelike fillings before your little one experiences discomfort. We also have cleanings in which remove all plaque and tartar to prevent enamel erosion and limit the risk of cavities. With fluoride treatments, we can apply a special varnish to the teeth to strengthen the outer enamel and safeguard the teeth against cavities. Since many kids have trouble reaching the rear teeth when they brush and floss, our team can apply dental sealants to the rear molars. This acrylic layer prevents food from becoming stuck on or between the teeth, limiting the risk of tooth decay. They can even stay in place for up to ten years in some cases!
Caring for smiles at home also helps fight cavities. Be sure your little ones brush for two minutes in the morning and again at night, and that they floss every evening too. Be sure they use a fluoride toothpaste, and you can time them with a sand timer, song, or video!
