Oral Health: When Healthy Foods Turn Bad

Have you ever had that moment when you’re about to eat a mouthful of something that you think is exceptionally healthy and someone makes one of those comments? Something along the lines of, “you’re eating that?” Frustratingly enough, it’s more common than you might think to reach for foods you think are beneficial for your oral health only to find out they are not what you thought. Let’s run through some examples, so you get a feel for what can make seemingly healthy foods not so great for your smile.

When They’re Candied

Think about some foods that you love when they’re candied (as in, coated in caramel, sprinkled with sugar and cinnamon, etc.). Perhaps you are a huge fan of candied apples, you love peanuts dipped in chocolate, and more. While foods like apples and peanuts are absolutely good for your body and your oral health, they’re not so great for your teeth when that sugar is involved. Keep this in mind.

When They’re Too Hard

Now, there’s most certainly a difference between a piece of bread and a very hard cracker. There’s a difference between soft nuts that are easy to chew and very hard nuts that you cannot seem to break apart with your teeth. Even healthy foods can prove harmful for your oral health when they’re simply too hard (you could crack a tooth!).

When The Natural Ingredients Are Dangerous

Did you know that just because an ingredient is natural doesn’t mean it’s good for your oral health? Cane sugar is natural, after all, and it’s not good for your teeth because it can lead to decay. So, avoid sugar and acidic foods when you can to protect your smile.
