What Is Bruxism?

Bruxism is a condition where you grind or clench your teeth whether you’re awake or asleep. However, if you do have sleep Bruxism, you’re more likely to have sleep apnea – a sleeping disorder where your sleep is interrupted from pauses in your breathing. If you are experiencing frequent pain in your jaw, it could be possible that you are suffering from Bruxism. Bruxism is not limited to age – it can occur in children and adults, but it may present itself differently in each patient. What is bruxism?

What Causes Bruxism?

Bruxism can be caused by several different things including; stress, anger, acid reflux, or a result of a misaligned bite. Sometimes, patients will develop a habit of clenching their jaw in order to focus – this has been a huge cause of Bruxism.

What Are Symptoms Of Bruxism?

  • Chipped or Loose Teeth
  • Tired or Sore Jaw
  • Tooth Sensitivity
  • Teeth Grinding
  • Headache

How Do You Treat Bruxism?

It’s actually rare to need treatment for Bruxism because usually it doesn’t last long enough. However, there are several options that you can discuss with your dentist about appliances that can protect your teeth and jaw. In other cases, you may need therapy to relieve you of whatever it is that is causing your Bruxism. For example, if you are stressed – you would benefit from some relaxation techniques or stress management therapy.
