Why Flossing Is So Important

While brushing your teeth seems rather easy and painless, most people hate flossing. Why? Is it because it is messy? Hard to do? Inconvenient? The fact is that no matter why or how much you hate flossing, it is an important step in your dental care. Flossing may seem like an un-required added step but it performs a function that brushing can’t. It gets in between your teeth where toothbrush bristles don’t fit. Dental floss is an interdental cleaner that can help remove plaque from tight places and from the gaps at the base of your teeth between your gums.

The Purpose of Dental Floss

Dental floss is designed to remove plaque, tartar, and food debris that get lodged in between your teeth and between your teeth and gums. The purpose of your gums is to hold your teeth in place. If your gums become compromised your teeth can become loose and fall out. Harmful bacterial plaque can build up around the base of your teeth and gums and cause periodontal disease. The purpose of dental floss is to help remove this harmful plaque.

If Saving Your Teeth Isn’t Enough…

If saving your teeth isn’t enough reason to floss, how about saving your money? If you maintain proper oral health and attend bi-annual dental visits you can avoid a dental emergency. If you hardly care for your teeth and only visit your dentist for emergency situations, you can be throwing money to the wind. Research indicates that dental emergencies can cost 10 times more over a period of time than if you take care of your teeth and visit your dentist regularly. Proper tooth care includes brushing at least twice a day and flossing daily.
