When Should You Schedule An Emergency Visit?

Dental emergencies can impact people of all ages, and they rarely happen at convenient times. We understand, and offer emergency dental care to handle these issues and repair smiles before major complications can occur! In today’s blog, your Grand Prairie, TX, dentist talks about our approach to emergency dentistry.

Examples of Dental Emergencies

What constitutes a dental emergency, and when should you contact our team for treatment? Basically, any injury to your teeth or gums that isn’t life threatening but requires immediate attention is a dental emergency. For example, this could include a chipped, cracked, or broken tooth. A tooth that suddenly hurts or if you have an object caught between teeth or under the gums, this needs to be seen right away. A knocked-out tooth is also a reason to see us for emergency dental care. Dental emergencies could also include damaged or missing restorations or dental prosthetics, or compromised orthodontics.

Easing Your Discomfort

When your dental emergency happens, you need to contact our team right away. If you reach us during our normal business hours, we will try to see you same-day if possible. If you contact us outside of our normal business hours, then leave a message and a member of our team will reach out to you soon with possible appointment times.

In the meantime, you can take steps to ease your discomfort. You can stem any bleeding with a piece of cloth or gauze, and use a cold compress to reduce facial swelling. We also recommend taking an over-the-counter pain reliever, and rinsing with warm water. If a tooth is broken, see if you can recover any pieces and if so, bring them to the office. If a tooth is knocked out, then pick it up only by the crown, never the root, and place it in a sealed container or bag of salt water or milk. Bring it with you when you see us!

Repairing Your Tooth

Our team will carefully examine your injury with advanced digital imaging technology, so we can assess the severity and then plan treatment with precision and accuracy. For minor damage, such as a chipped tooth, we could conduct dental bonding in only one visit to provide lifelike repair. If you have more substantial breakage or a fractured tooth, we can provide repair with a custom dental crown. We can restore a knocked-out tooth to its proper place in your smile, and also replace any compromised restorations, prosthetics, or orthodontics. Don’t ignore your injury, as even minor damage could increase the risk of tooth decay and infection, leading to painful symptoms and even the risk of eventual tooth loss.

If you have any questions about how our team will conduct dental emergency care for you and your family, then contact our office today!
