Dry Mouth: It Could Happen To You

You might hear the term dry mouth and immediately pass it off as something that’s a side effect of those medications in television ads. What you might not realize is that 1. You might be taking a medicine that causes this issue as a side effect. Also, 2. Anyone can end up with this usually temporary problem that is treatable, that you might be able to address at home, and that can lead to some serious complications if you ignore it! Let’s help you get to know the details, so you’re ready if you end up with parched tissues.

What Is Dry Mouth?

This oral health concern is actually just what it sounds like: Your mouth becomes dry as the result of decreased saliva flow. Why does your saliva dry out, you wonder? In some cases, you’re not producing enough (possibly due to certain medication use). In others, you are causing the present saliva to dry as the result of issues like mouth breathing due to allergies or congestion.

Why Is It Something To Worry About?

Your healthy mouth depends on moisture. When adequate moisture is not present and dry mouth takes over, the bacteria in your mouth will then begin to take over. This occurs because your saliva acts as a flushing agent, sweeping bacteria away throughout each and every day and while you sleep. As you know, too much bacteria can mean bad breath, cavities, gum inflammation, and more.

What Should You Do?

If you have an instinct regarding why this is happening, address it. Deal with your allergies or congestion. Switch to a medication (if you can) that does not list dry mouth as a side effect. Consume more water. Of course, it’s always wise to schedule a visit with us, so we can assist you.
