Do You Have Difficulty Sleeping?

Do you have difficulty sleeping? Each year millions of Americans have trouble going to sleep as a result of a serious disorder. Known as obstructive sleep apnea, or OSA, the disorder can prevent the deep, continuous sleep needed to function properly thorough the day. Fortunately, we can discuss possible treatment options.

Sleep Apnea Quiz

  1. True or False: OSA causes patients to stop breathing at night.
  2. True or False: Persistent snoring may be a warning sign.
  3. True or False: Without treatment you can develop serious health problems.
  4. True or False: We can discuss multiple treatment options.

Answer Key

  1. True. The disorder occurs when the soft tissues in the throat and the back of the mouth become overly relaxed. The tissue then collapse, blocking airflow. Patients stop breathing until the brain alerts them to wake up and start breathing. Despite having no memory of these episodes, they can happen to a patient hundreds of times in a single night.
  2. True. Along with snoring you feel exhausted during the time, wake up gasping for air or possibly choking, or feel irritable during the day. You may also find concentrating on a task to be difficult. Don’t ignore these signs as they maybe an indicator you need treatment.
  3. True. Over time, untreated sleep apnea can lead to a higher risk of increased bloods pressure, stroke, depression, and heart attack.
  4. True. First, we may recommend a CPAP machine. The patient wears a mask attached to a machine that forces air through the nose and mouth while you sleep. Patients continue breathing and avoid apnea episodes. An oral appliance is similar to a nightguard and is worn at night, moving the jaw forward to keep airways open.
