When you come in for a dental checkup, Dr. Smith will evaluate your teeth, gums, and jaw for any signs of decay, gingivitis, or TMJ/TMD.
First, Dr. Smith may order that X-Rays of your teeth be taken. X-Rays are not necessary during every checkup, but are helpful in showing the dentist what is going on beyond the surface of your teeth. Dr. Smith can review X-rays from different visits to detect changes in your teeth, gums, and jaw over time. Usually, Dr. Smith orders X-rays for new patients, and for patients who haven’t had recent X-rays.
Bite-wing X-rays provide a visual of each tooth.
Panoramic X-rays provide a view of your entire facial and jaw structure. Our office uses digital X-ray technology to provide the sharpest images.
Next, Dr. Smith will evaluate your teeth and gums visually and with a manual instrument. He’ll be looking for any potential trouble spots that warrant further examination — such as an X-ray if you did not have one earlier, or intraoral photography. Here, a technician uses a tiny camera to take photos of your teeth. The photos are blown up so they appear much larger, so the dentist can spot any minute fractures or chips.
If Dr. Smith finds evidence of cavities or other problems, he’ll discuss his findings with you and together you’ll develop a treatment plan that is both convenient and as conservative as possible.
After your exam, one of our hygienists will clean your teeth and gumline using hand-held instruments including an ultrasonic scaler that uses vibrations to dislodge the most stubborn plaque and tarter.
If it looks to the hygienist like your tooth-brushing regimen isn’t completely effective, she’ll explain the steps you can take at home to get better results. If you can correct your technique, you may be able to prevent the onset of tooth decay more effectively.
If Dr. Smith has recommended preventive fluoride treatments or dental sealants, the hygienist will apply these after your cleaning. These preventives are especially effective in children who struggle with proper brushing techniques.
