Similar to ridge augmentation treatment, a sinus lift procedure is intended to increase the amount of bone between the maxillary sinuses and the jaw to, oftentimes, support implant placement. In addition to tooth loss, other factors that contribute to bone loss and/or may necessitate a sinus lift augmentation include proximity of adjacent teeth roots, location of the sinuses, blood vessels, and nerves, presence of a large sinus, or anatomically small jaw.
Several patients who have lost their back teeth in the upper jaw may not have enough bone structure left for implants to be placed, and the thought of additional oral surgery may feel overwhelming. Dr. Smith and our team care about your dental experience and strive to help you feel comfortable by understanding your oral health needs and options.
During a sinus lift augmentation, a small incision is made in the gum line to expose the bone and then bone grafting material is placed. Once the dentist is finished, he or she will close the incision and allow the bone to heal and strengthen over a specified period of time. After this, your dentist will help schedule your implant treatment according to your agreed upon treatment schedule, and you will be on your way to a complete and functional smile.
