If you find yourself struggling with a damaged or aching tooth, then you need treatment. With dental emergency care, our team can offer care to address the situation and protect complications. In today’s blog, your Grand Prairie, TX, dentist talks about how we handle a dental emergency.
What is a Dental Emergency?
A dental emergency is any situation in which you have damage in your smile or pain that requires immediate attention. If the issue is potentially life threatening, then we urge you to call 911 or proceed to your nearest emergency room. Otherwise, call us right away! If you reach us during our normal business hours, we will try to see you same-day. If not, please leave a message and a member of our team will contact you shortly with possible appointment times.
Common dental emergencies include chipped, cracked, or worn-down teeth. Teeth that have been knocked loose or out need to be seen right away, as could pain in a tooth that arrives suddenly. A damaged or missing restoration or prosthetic is also a cause for concern, as are damaged orthodontics. Don’t ignore these issues, see us right away to avoid potential complications and worsening discomfort!
How Should You Respond to Your Urgent Situation
We suggest you rinse with warm water and use a bit of cloth or gauze to stem bleeding, just gently bite down on these. To avoid facial swelling, place a cold compress or ice pack to the side of the face. You can also take an over-the-counter pain reliever as needed. We recommend trying to recover any pieces of damaged tooth and bring them with you if possible. If a tooth has been knocked out, then please pick it up only by the crown, don’t touch the root. You can gently rinse away any dirt or foreign debris, but keep any tissues intact. We suggest placing it in a glass of milk or later water and ring it with you to the office. You can also return the tooth to the socket and gently bite down to keep in place until we can see you for treatment.
Treating Your Damaged Teeth
If your tooth has been knocked out, we can return to the smile and keep it in place. If you have a damaged tooth, we could offer repair with dental bonding, which only takes one visit to complete and uses a lifelike composite resin. For more substantial damage, we could place a custom-made crown. We can repair orthodontics or replace restorations or dental prosthetics as needed. If you are faced with a dental emergency, then please see our team for treatment to avoid discomfort and keep your smile whole, beautiful, and healthy. If you have any questions about our approach to care and repair, then contact our office today to learn more.
