Treating Complicated Tooth Loss With Partials

When you have minor tooth loss, we could prescribe a bridge, and for total tooth loss a full denture could be necessary. But if you have a more complex case of tooth loss, we could help with a custom and lifelike set of partials. In today’s blog, your Grand Prairie, TX, dentist talks about our partial dentures and how they can help you enjoy a full smile again!

Complicated Cases of Missing Teeth

With a complex case of tooth loss, you have several missing teeth and these gaps are spread out across the arch of your smile. This is too complex for a bridge, but you still have enough natural teeth in place that a full denture isn’t needed. With a partial, we can fill these gaps and ensure a full smile again. Treatment then helps prevent the onset of complications, such as misalignment, cavities, TMJ disorder, gum disease, and bruxism (teeth grinding).

Creating Your Partial Denture

To begin, we will carefully examine your smile. We want to understand the causes of your lost teeth, as we may need to manage issues like gum disease before we move forward with tooth replacement. We also want to assess the health of your teeth, as some may need to be extracted. We then take detailed digital images and impressions of your bite, which we use in a lab setting to design and craft a custom dental prosthetic. The partial will contain new teeth set in an acrylic base. The teeth will be made from ceramic, and shaded to blend with your smile. The base is designed to look like gum tissue too.

Securing Your New Teeth

The prosthetic will contain metal clasps that will connect to natural teeth and secure your new denture in place. These clasps will be invisible when the prosthetic is in place, so you have lifelike results with new teeth that blend with the rest of your natural teeth. The prosthetic needs to be removed for cleaning and soaking, and will last about 5 to 10 years on average. But this allows you to feel confident when you smile and enjoy a greater variety of foods again, so your quality of life will improve.
