Our last blog talked about handling complex cases of tooth loss with a set of partial dentures. But what if you have lost most of your teeth? In these situations, you may need a full set of new teeth! In today’s blog, your Grand Prairie, TX, dentist talks about how we create and secure a complete set of dentures.
The Causes and Impacts of Total Tooth Loss
When you lose most of your teeth, this could severely limit your meal options. Being forced to rely on soft foods deprives you of your favorite foods, but also limits nutritional intake. This level of tooth loss could make clear speech difficult and impact how you communicate. People would also feel embarrassed and simply avoid social interactions, which further harms their quality of life. The jawbone also weakens, which leads to an older appearance as the mass and density erodes. But to help return function, health, and beauty to your smile, we could create and secure a set of full dentures.
Creating Your Complete Dentures
How do we design your new dentures? Our team will examine your smile and if you have a few remaining teeth, we may gently extract them. We then take detailed images and impressions of your bite, which we then use in a dental lab setting to design and fabricate your new prosthetic. The prosthetic will contain a complete row of new ceramic teeth, which we shade to appear natural. These will be inserted into an acrylic base that mimics the appearance of gum tissues. When they are ready, we can secure them in your smile.
Supporting a Full Prosthetic
We have two different options to choose from. The traditional option is a removable set of dentures, which are secured with adhesives or suction, and need to be removed for cleaning and soaking. These tend to last about 5 to 10 years, as the jaw ridge will continue to change with time and alter the fit. But! We could also insert multiple dental implants per arch and use these to secure your new teeth. The implants prevent changes to the jaw ridge, so your smile and facial structure remain intact. The prosthetic portion is then attached to the posts and is fixed in place, never slipping and never requiring removal for cleaning or soaking. These can last for decades to come, possibly a lifetime!
